Illustrations for a black-and-white Soviet-era film about the construction of a new country
How and why to make illustrations for the film?
I am in awe of our heritage, especially cinema. Many films were sincere, pure, about goodness and beauty. Plus, decent people, innovators worked in the Soviet film industry, because they invented new art, essentially from scratch. This spirit of experiment is close to me, and I decided to make a number of illustrations for various iconic films.
I did not aim to copy the frame, I was worried about the story told in the picture, without sound. It was the state, the mood I wanted to convey in the illustration. In this regard, I chose Malevich as a stylistic reference for a film that tells the construction of the New World.
Films have taught me a lot, in particular, the construction of the composition.
